Teacher Assistant

The Teacher Assistant program focuses on working with students who have special needs.  Graduates will develop skills to assist teachers in working with children and adolescents with a variety of developmental, physical and/or emotional disabilities.  In addition to occupation specific courses, students receive training in first aid and CPR as well as personal and professional excellence.

This program is excellent preparation for careers in both elementary and secondary schools.

The program is condensed into 7.5 months; 4.5 months in studies and 3 months in work experience.  The work term provides you with valuable experience for your resume prior to graduation.

• To develop practical skills assisting teachers in working with children and adolescents with a variety of developmental, physical and/or emotional disabilities

I. TEACHER ASSISTANT COURSES - 249 hours

• The Role of the Teachers’ Assistant 15 hours
• Developmental Psychology (Theory) 36 hours
• Developmental Psychology (Applied) 36 hours
• Essential and Supportive Skills for Students with Developmental Disabilities 54 hours
• Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities 54 hours
• Teaching Students with Emotional Disorders and/or Mental Illnesses 54 hours




II. COMPUTER COURSES - 54 hours

• Thought Patterns for a Successful Career (Personal Excellence Program) (30 hours)

• First Aid and CPR (16 hours)
• Effective Written Communication (27 hours)
